Celebrating 39 Years for The PA Christmas Show

Today we get creative with Joyful Arts Studio. Susan Shaffer shared her excitement about the original art she is selling this holiday season.

Thanks for being an exhibitor at the 2021 PA Christmas & Gift Show. Is this your first time, or are you a returning exhibitor?

To be honest, I have never attended the PA Christmas & Gift Show. I hear wonderful things and am very excited to have this opportunity to share my artwork with folks.

Welcome to the show! What kind of artwork will you be offering at your booth?

I will be offering beautifully detailed hand-painted ornaments, silk scarves, Batik Silk scarves, Batik watercolor paintings, Mandala paintings, original note cards by Susan Shaffer, Cyanotype prints, and vintage linens. I will have a wide variety of diverse artwork, from acrylics, watercolors, Batik watercolors, Eco-printed Silk Scarves, Batik Silk Scarves, Ice-dyed clothing, Cyanotype prints collaged on wooden items, and vintage linens. My booth items range in price from $12-several hundred dollars for a painting.

How long have you been creating these various pieces?

I have been an artist for 35 years plus. I thoroughly enjoy teaching art and sharing the joy of creating art. I love all forms of art but consider myself a watercolorist. However, over the last five years, I have migrated to artforms that allow me to let go of control and see the surprise finished product. Recently I have been creating a great many cyanotype prints. Cyanotype is how blueprints were originally created. The combined chemicals are extremely light-sensitive, and we count on the sunlight to do its magic. It is an amazing art form that has recently been rediscovered. I am also doing some eco-printing. I form bundles of paper with leaves and flowers between them, sometimes I use silk fabrics too. These bundles are placed in the oven or pan and steamed for several hours. The results are very dimensional prints of leaves and flowers. Ice-dying is also a new art for me. I place my fabric, clothing, etc. on a rack, cover it with ice, then sprinkle the powdered dyes to melt down through over the next 24 hours. The results produce the most stunning vibrant colors I have ever seen in fabrics. Be sure to stop by, and we can talk about creating art!

That is very interesting! What is your favorite thing about Christmas?

My favorite thing about Christmas is getting together with family and giving gifts to others. It is a great joy to me to give.

Do you have any other messages for those who are coming to the show?

Do embrace the Christmas season and remember the true meaning of Christmas . . . Jesus is the Reason for the Season.

Thank you, Susan! We hope you enjoy your first time at the PA Christmas & Gift Show!
